Are Bee Sensual products anti-aging?

Who or what are you comparing yourself with when you say…

“I’ll pay anything for the word anti-aging on a cosmetic container.”

“I don’t want to age!”

“I hate wrinkles, they make me look so old!”

Is it a photo-shopped image in a magazine or online?

One thing Bee Sensual won’t have on its label is the word anti-aging, because instead of creating a fear of aging, I want our products to inspire those who use them to embrace themselves exactly as they are without wanting more and without comparing themselves to an idea of what they ‘should’ look like. I want our products to create a sense of self-love.

Here’s my opinion on anti-aging:

1)  Focusing our energy on what we don’t want and what we are fearing will only make us less satisfied with the many things our body and skin do for us. Do you really want to look 25 when you’re 55 anyway?

I know I don’t. I have however also been trained to want blemish free skin, so of course part of me would prefer smooth, even skin…but worrying about it and stressing about making it happen…that’s going to make my skin ‘age’ through stress. Instead I work on embracing those freckles, those lines, those scars…

Do you look at these wrinkles and think that they're ugly or 'less than'?

Do you look at these wrinkles and think that they’re ugly or ‘less than’?

As a society I think we often place happiness outside of ourselves. If only my skin looked smoother…lighter…darker, then I’d feel happy in my own skin. If only I didn’t have those bumps on my hips, then I’d be able to love myself and feel happy in my body. As long as we’re basing our happiness and value on these external things there will be something missing. We will always find something that isn’t perfect and needs fixing.

I believe the key is to shift our focus, slowly and gently, to what we love or like about ourselves. Just ask a friend or partner or family member to list your great qualities. No doubt that will be an easy job for them. These wonderful qualities will not fade with time, they will only become more vibrant and glowing.

Also focus on what you love about your body. If I talk more about that though this blog will be pages and pages long 😉

2) Do you really believe that a cream you use topically can magically make you look 25?

Again, I don’t! I believe that your skin is a reflection of your inner physical and emotional health. If we fill our days with mental stress and negative self-talk, drink lots of soft drinks or energy drinks, eat food on the go, eat processed food and wind down with bottles of wine…what are our organs going to think, and then how is our skin going to reflect this?

To be honest I think the most damaging to our body is the mental chit-chat that goes on. If you want to know about all the incredible things that happen in your body when you stress yourself out, read Dr Libby’s work here.

Here’s where sensuality and mindfulness can work wonders. I know your day is busy. I understand that you’ve got 350 million things to juggle. I know you don’t have time for morning meditations and nightly yoga. I get it, I promise! What you do have time for though is drinking a glass of water and washing your hands.

So, how about you connect those activities (and others if you choose) with a healthy dose of mindfulness? As you drink that glass of water, feel it…taste it…notice all the sensations in those moments. If your mind wonders just bring your attention back to that glass of water. As you’re washing your hands, look in the mirror and find one tiny thing (more if you can) about yourself to be thankful for…maybe it’s your smile, maybe it’s a little freckle that you love, or maybe it’s that you’ve got your favourite lipstick on today that makes you feel happy inside 🙂

If you’re on the hunt for anti-aging, see if you can go out and just embrace you for you. Try not to compare yourself to others, and when you do, be gentle with yourself.

You are beautiful!

I know that for sure, and I’m always here to support you on your journey as you come to realise that you truly are 🙂

How Bee Sensual has evolved…

We cannot separate our personal journey from our business, and recently I’ve been reflecting on how my dream for Bee Sensual, due to my own personal journey, has evolved and blossomed since it was shared with the world at the end of 2012.

Bee Sensual grew out of a dream for natural skin care, using no nasties and the wonderful healing products of bees; ‘sensual’ for the self connection opportunity it would create. Then I began exploring the word ‘sensual’ more and how it’s tied in with ‘mindfulness’, and how necessary it is to simply live in this one moment as often as we can. And I saw Bee Sensual products as a way to remind us to become mindful in that moment we gently apply them…taking in the smells and textures and sensation on the skin.

And from that came the most important development of all…gentle self-love.

Realising how much I’ve berated myself in my life and beaten myself up, in younger years seeking perfection and a body that only airbrushed models have, I knew it was vital to change this.

There is a saying:

You cannot truly take care of that which you do not love.

So, if I look at my skin and feel frustrated and disappointed by the wrinkles around my eyes, or I curse the scars from the teenage days of picking pimples, or I want to hide away the too many freckles or mingled discolouration, am I really loving myself? Am I treating myself the way I would a friend?

The answer is a big NO!

So how can I expect to truly take care of myself? How can I expect my body, which is only doing its best (always) with what it’s presented with, to feel energetic, vibrant and healthy? We need to send our bodies love. Let me say that again…it is essential that we send our bodies and ourselves love. By creating stress in our systems around what we see in the mirror, or how we should be acting, we only further deplete our energy and resilience. We’ve got to love what we see first and the rest will flow. We can’t wait for the day we find a magical miracle cream that takes away wrinkles, or an injection that paralyses our skin into non-expression. This may bring a few moments of happiness, but then we will simply find the next thing to hate or berate.

We need to love. Simple. Yet not so simple at all! Self-love seems to be one of those really tricky, confusing concepts that gets thrown at us at some point in our lives. How do I do that? you may ask. Well, I definitely don’t have all the answers, but I know that through necessity, practice, constant reminders and perseverance, I love myself a lot more than I did when Bee Sensual first began.

One of my dreams now is that, through our beautiful Bee Sensual products made with love, those using them will find moments to be still and present and send their precious self some much needed love. Remember this…even if it’s only twice a day when you moisturise, that’s all it takes…it is the simple act of planting the self-love seed that, over time and with regular nourishment, will grow into a beautiful self-love plant that blossoms in ways that you never thought possible!

The bees know it’s spring…manuka is flowering

The bees know that it’s spring…

While us humans think that it is still winter, wet, windy and cold, the bees have other ideas! They are starting to build up their populations in anticipation of the first bloom of spring.

And for us here in the Far North the first bloom of the season comes in the form of manuka. Manuka honey has some delicious and unusual properties. First up, it is really difficult to extract or spin out of the comb. Once the bees collect the nectar and store it in the comb, the honey sets like jelly and will not cooperate with traditional honey extraction methods. A clever device has been developed which is known as a pricker; this device has thousands of plastic needles that extend into the comb to agitate each cell of manuka honey, break the surface tension and loosen it, ready to be spun out in the traditional manner (We’ll share pics when it’s being extracted).

Manuka honey also has well known and documented anti-bacterial properties. This has been great for beekeepers, as the unique properties of the honey have driven demand up from all over the world and hence the price beekeepers receive per kilogram. The flip side of the high prices has seen many cowboys enter the industry, and the etiquette that once governed where hives were placed is harder to find. Our theory is to make the health and well-being of our bees number one, create wonderful relationships with our landowners, and see the silver linings 🙂

So for now our Bee Sensual hives are healthy with booming populations of bees and are sitting in sunny apiary sites with the beautiful manuka flowers starting to bloom en masse a short flight away! The season is off to a good start, now it is up the weather gods!
