5 Tips for Winter Skin

Looking after your winter skin

With the cold of winter setting its frosticles in up here in the Far North, it’s not only our clothing that changes but also our precious skin. When it’s cold the air is dryer (especially if you’re in snowy regions), and therefore our skin becomes dryer. Moisture escapes our skin cells, and things like wind and central heating can exacerbate this process.

When you’re choosing a moisturiser, please remember that natural is best! You don’t want one with drying ingredients like paraffin (BP wax, petrolatum), mineral oil, isopropyl ‘anything’, or alcohol to be near the top of the ingredients’ list – they will do your winter skin no favours.

Enjoy these 5 simple things you can do to help nurture your winter skin…

  1. Gentle Exfoliation
    coffee-scrub-winter-skin-bodyGentle exfoliation is the perfect way to remove the top layer of dry cells and make it easier for your moisturiser to sink in and protect the softer layer of skin underneath. Gentle is the key. Coffee or pumice is great on your body, but not on your face, unless of course it’s super super fine. One of the most moisturising and gentle scrubs for the face is oats/oatmeal. Something like honey or almond meal is great too. Our Face and Body Scrub has fine particles of walnut shell which, when mixed with water provide gentle exfoliation for your whole self. Remember your dear lips in this process!
  2. Rich moisturisers
    In summer you might get away with a light moisturiser, but at this time of year you need to be feeding those lower layers with good natural oils. And if your skin is feeling quite dry I would recommend layering your products. I’m using my Day Cream and Eye Love during the day and then Rejuvenating Oil at night. This time of year is when you get to pull out the rich luxurious body butters, balms and oils for your winter skin.
  3. Rehydrate
    It’s definitely not the time for cold waters, iced teas and the likes – most people shy away from those when it’s so cold anyway. Plus, from a Traditional Chinese perspective, consuming cold when you’re cold and needing more vital energy, does you no good 😉 At least we have access to an awesome range of herbal teas (with honey if you’re a fan) and light warm broths are good replenisher. I always start my day with a ginger and honey tea, sometimes with a little lemon or apple cider thrown in for good measure.
  4. Don’t strip your skin
    As tempting as it is to hop into a boiling hot shower or bath and bask in it until you feel thawed out, the longer you stay in the more moisture escapes from your skin. So, if possible turn the heat down just a touch and try not to hang out there too long! I know, it’s hard! Also, replace soapy cleansers with cream cleansers so that you’re rehydrating your winter skin while cleaning.
  5. Good fats
    Increasing your intake of good fats, like coconut, flaxseed, or any other oil of your choice will give you an internal boost. Then your skin doesn’t have to rely only on what you’re putting on it.

Please remember, just because it’s winter, doesn’t mean the sun won’t burn your skin. If you’re an outdoors’ person…surfing, skiing, or working outside in the garden, please use a natural SPF to protect your lovely skin.

And as always, whatever you’re doing, whatever treats you’re giving your skin, remember to inject it with a healthy dose of self-love!

 

Do I need a skincare routine?

Some of you reading this will have a skincare routine, some will love the idea of a skincare routine, but only sometimes stick to it, and some of you may not have any skincare routine at all. All or none of the above are perfectly fine.

Me, I’m an inbetweener of sorts. I have a skincare routine, but it’s a very flexible one. There are some things that I do everyday in routine fashion, but the products change (I will delve into that in a second).

I actually believe it’s a really good idea to mix it up. I think our skin loves change, and so if some nights you simply cleanse and then go to sleep with nothing else on your skin, that’s great. And if some days all you want is Gel Toner, yet on others you want Gel Toner and Day Cream…wonderful. Listen to what your skin wants, because like us it needs variation.

My skincare ‘routine’…

There will always be a few sprays of the Rose Mister somewhere during the day, because I’m in love with that amazing smell right now and it is SO hydrating!

Morning:

Face – wash my face with cold water (even in winter) and pat dry with a towel. I also glance at myself in the mirror, say good morning and give myself a smile (even on those days where I don’t feel like it). Moisturise – now this could sometimes simply be a gentle application of Gel Toner and nothing else. Other days it might only be Rejuvenating Oil. When I’m feeling like using cream, in the summer I’ll use Day Cream and winter when my skin’s a little dryer, the Night Cream. It really all depends.

If you like layering I would advise Gel Toner followed by either Rejuvenating Oil or Day Cream.

Body – at the moment I’m loving massaging my upper legs and glute muscles (;)) with Body Oil and then treating the rest to some Body Butter.

Evening:

Face – I wash my face in the shower with my Cream Cleanser. When I get out I put on either Gel Toner or Rejuvenating Oil because I feel like my skin is quite moisturised after cleansing. On days where I’ve been outside a lot and I feel like an extra boost, I’ll put Night Cream on. Most nights I also use Eye Love around my eyes and lips.

If you like layering I would advise Eye Love and Gel Toner followed by either the Rejuvenating Oil or Night Cream.

Body – some evenings I’ll moisturise before bed and others I won’t. At the moment if I do, it’s to give myself a loving massage with the Body Oil – it’s my self-love ritual that I’m really enjoying right now.

At least once a week I like to do a facemask and body-scrub. So I’ll either create a chocolate or turmeric facemask or simply cover my face in pure honey and leave for about 10-15 minutes. I’m actually working on a gentle face scrub at the moment that I will be releasing soon.

As for the body I have made a coffee body scrub (ground coffee, honey and almond oil), which I massage all over my arms, legs and body, and just love the tingling feeling that the scrub leaves and how delicious I smell afterwards.

I believe the most important ingredient to your skincare routine however, EVERY single DAY, is a dose of self-love. Love your skin as you’re cleansing or moisturising it.

Love your body – even if it’s only that one square centimetre that you can bring yourself to love on your arm, or your eyelashes, or the shape of your fingers.

Start small, keeping yourself open to the possibility of increasing the amount of self love over time.

DIY Chocolate Face Mask – 100% edible!

3 ingredients from your kitchen: cocoa powder, raw honey and yoghurt

A DIY chocolate Face Mask to try at home 🙂

For an exfoliating, regenerating and delicious chocolaty treat for your skin, all you need is equal amounts of 3 common ingredients from your kitchen:

  • a cup/container of your choice
  • 1 tsp cocoa powder (I use Trade Aid’s Fair Trade organic) – high in antioxidants and wonderful for skin renewal
  • 1 tsp raw honey (I use our own manuka of course) – exfoliating, hydrating, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and regenerating
  • 1 tsp yoghurt (one of my favs is this BioFarm organic – plain) – not only rich in nutrients (such as zinc, calcium and b vitamins), but also high in lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid amazing for exfoliating and making your skin feel soft and refreshed

You can of course make larger quantities and store it in the fridge for a few days. Mine doesn’t ever make it to storage because it’s too delicious as an afternoon (or morning snack)!

DIY chocolate face mask

Organic cocoa powder, raw honey, organic yoghurt = delicious chocolate face mask (100% edible)

Mix together and then gently apply to your face – a lovely soft make-up brush would be ideal here. In circular motions I then lightly massage the chocolaty goodness into my skin to make sure that it deals to old skin cells and cleans out my pores. After about 10-15 minutes when it gets tacky to touch I rinse my face with warm water and then lovingly apply Rejuvenating Oil. My skin feels so soft and nourished afterwards!

I’m quite glad my tongue is not too long, because although so tasty it would be pretty gross to lick it all off after exfoliating 😉

Turmeric sunshine on my face!

I’m a firm believer in turmeric’s amazing healing abilities when taken internally, especially for its incredible anti-inflammatory effects on the gut. That is a story for another time though.

A while ago I went hunting for a DIY face scrub to help with pigmentation and came across a recipe with turmeric powder in it. One of my favourite pastimes is researching, so I took the opportunity to read more about the topical use of turmeric and of course create a mask for myself.

All you need is 3 basic kitchen ingredients (with the option of sandalwood powder if you have or otherwise almond meal is perfect):

  • DIY turmeric mask1 tsp turmeric powder (I like to use organic)
  • 1 tsp plain yoghurt
  • 1 Tbsp honey (raw of course, and luckily in NZ a lot of the honey is)
  • Optional – 1 tsp sandalwood powder or almond meal

Mix the ingredients together in a clean container until you have a smooth consistency and then gently and lovingly massage your face with it. Turmeric of course stains everything, so please be careful of your clothes and favourite tea towels etc. ‘Will my face stain yellow?’ you may well ask. It must be the combination of goodies, but no it shouldn’t. Mine doesn’t anyway 😉

Leave it on for at least 10 minutes while you do something nice for yourself, like relax with a magazine or soothing cup of tea. The first time I did it I ended up listening to an inspiring talk on managing our beliefs around health and 30 minutes later I rinsed it off with warm water. My skin felt amazing!

Some of turmeric’s many properties are anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, which is why it is incredible for treating acne and pimples. It also regulates sebum production and therefore is a wonderful skin balancer if your skin is too oily/dry.

Yoghurt has high-levels of lactic acid, which means it gently exfoliates and hydrates. It is also very soothing and being high in zinc is healing for all number of skin conditions.

Honey, well honey is magic 🙂 And besides it makes the mask taste delicious and clean up is a treat 😉 Read more about it here.

Almond meal is a rich in essential fatty acids and vitamins, so while it gently exfoliates it is giving back nutrients and moisture to the skin.
