Joy Perfume for June

Joy for June!

With Winter well and truly here, why not celebrate with a boost of joyfulness with our new JOY perfume just released.

It is so easy for us all to put joy on the back-burner. We leave it for the weekends, holidays, ‘when there’s time’, but joy is actually the nourishment our soul craves and desires. It’s literally food for our soul. We need it in our lives, daily. Even if it’s a small boost by smelling a flower, or watching the light change in the evening sky. How about letting loose and dancing in your lounge to your favourite song.

I dare you to seek out joy, no matter what. And for an extra boost of enjoyment, our JOY perfume is the perfect reminder to follow your joy! On sale on June 1.

Our JOY perfume is a blend of beautiful essential oils and seed oils, including the refreshing scent of cucumber seed oil that reminds me of summer, combined with citrus overtones!

Why choose Bee Sensual’s natural JOY perfume?

Because JOY perfume is 100% natural, with over 80% of the ingredients organic, and it contains no nasties or synthetic compounds.

If you Google effects of synthetic fragrances, you’ll find a whole range of articles talking about hormone disruption, skin allergies, respiratory problems and more. Where are you exposed to these synthetic fragrances? To start, in your home. If all of your products are not 100% naturally scented from essential oils, then you find it in washing powder, shampoo, perfume, air fresheners, candles etc. Outside of your home in shops, workplaces, car fresheners and everyone else’s perfume.

Basically our system is overloaded with synthetic fragrance, which is a cocktail of chemicals containing a range of:

  • sulfates
  • parabens
  • synthetic fragrance
  • synthetic colours
  • T.E.A.
  • D.E.A.
  • glycols
  • silicones
  • PEGs
  • ethoxylate, or
  • formaldehyde

Our natural JOY perfume comes in a amber glass bottle with a roller ball lid for easy application. A combination of joy, organic jojoba oil and essential oils. Apply whenever you’re feeling like a joy boost to nourish your soul, or want to smell naturally joyful.

5 miraculous macadamia oil skin benefits

Other than being totally delicious, did you know that macadamia nut oil offers a whole range of health benefits – and not just for your beautiful skin? Although we could go on and on about these, we are going to zero in on the miraculous macadamia oil skin benefits in today’s post.

Having the ability to be taken either orally or topically, this wonderful oil has a chemical profile very similar to the human sebum. With so many marvellous properties, we struggled to keep this list to 5 benefits. It’s really no wonder this amazing ingredient features in so many of the Bee Sensual range of skin products!

5 Miraculous Macadamia Oil Skin Benefits

  1. The perfect choice for mature or dry skin

Macadamia nut oil contains one of the highest sources of palmitoleic fatty acids, an acid that exists naturally in our skin, but depletes as we age. Topping up our stores via skin treatment helps to lubricate and waterproof the skin, just like sebum.

  2. Heals your wounds

Did we mention how amazing palmitoleic acid is? Just incase you aren’t convinced, the omega 7 in this incredible fatty acid also aids in healing wounds, scratches and burns. The anti-inflammatory properties can also help reduce eczema or other skin irritations.

  3. Balances oily skin

Yes, you read correctly! Oil – at least the miraculous macadamia variety – contains linoleic acid which balances sebum production in oily skin and creates a natural protective barrier.

  4. Treats itchiness and redness

The phytosterols in macadamia nut oil are calming and healing and help restore the skin’s barrier function.

  5. Slight natural sunscreen

Containing a natural SPF of between 6-8, the powerful plant compound known as cinnamic acid which is contained in macadamia nut oil offers natural sun protection properties.

There is so much more we could say about this amazing stuff! If you’d like to read more about macadamia oil skin benefits, a great chemical profile for Macadamia Nut Oil can found here. But for now, we prefer to let the macadamia do the talking…

You can find this incredible oil in the following Bee Sensual products:

Have you tried this wonderful oil? We would love to hear about your experience with macadamia oil and the skin benefits you’ve noticed. Please tell us in the comments section below!

Exploring essential oils: Rose essential oil

No other flower has been exalted in literature, mythology and used for so many sacred purposes as the rose – Battaglia

Considering the above quote, I thought rose essential oil (damascena in particular) would be the perfect one to begin with since it so well loved, and one of my most blissfully favourite fragrances. I have a small bottle of it next to my desk to breath in when I need a pick me up.

It is also one of the most healing on the skin!

Rose essential oil cultivation…

rose-essential-oil-damascenaThe cultivation of rose damascena and the production of rose oil was introduced in Bulgaria in the 15th Century. Since rose petals are so fragile they have to be picked manually to minimise the loss of oil. Harvesting occurs between 5am and 10am because this is when the flowers open and the oil content is high.

4,000kg of rose petals produces 1kg of rose oil. Or 4kg of rose petals produces 1g of rose oil! Imagine that! That is a HUGE amount of beautiful roses considering how light they are!

Rose essential oil uses…

Skin – rose damascena essential oil is a beautiful softener while hydrating, stimulating and helps to repair broken capillaries, inflammation and skin redness. Rose water, the condensed steam from the rose oil distilling process, is very soothing and again mildly astringent. Our Rose Mister contains 95% organic rose water from Enio Bonchev in Italy.

Body – rose is a wonderful tonic for the uterus while purifying and regulating. I have also read that it can be very soothing around certain times of the month. It is also helpful for respiratory tract and digestive problems.

Psychologocial – rose damascena is believed to have a profound psychological effect, especially on our hearts. It soothes irritability, insomnia, anger, despair, frustration, fear and anxiety. It is also wonderful for sorrow, opening our hearts to friendship and empathy, and Mojay says it is the herb of love – healing emotional wounds and opening our hearts.

Our Hand Cream is the other product that has beautiful rose damascena in it, and at the moment I am playing with a perfume which is predominantly rose…it’s going to be magical!

Self-indulgent Romans wore rose garlands at their feasts as a prevention against drunkenness!

What are your experiences with rose essential oil?

Magic Manuka Balm

The story behind our Magic Manuka Balm

Exciting news here at Bee Sensual. We have a new and amazing product – Magic Manuka Balm!

How it came to be?

The owner of Kauri Cliffs wanted to meet with me last year to develop a range of manuka products for their spa. He had used manuka honey with great success on a wound on his leg and is now a firm believer in it’s amazing properties.

I played around with ratios of honey to my organic balm and eventually settled on the perfect blend – 15% 10+ manuka honey with organic beeswax, organic almond oil and vitamin e oil.

He loved it and when I trialled it on myself it left my skin feeling AMAZINGLY soft and hydrated. I fell in love. Since it has such a high manuka content I decided it must be good for all sorts of things and I set to work testing my theory. Not long thereafter I fell off my bicycle and grazed my elbow well and truly on rough tar (long and not so lady-like story) – great testing opportunity!

I know, elbows aren’t that sexy, but hey we’re all about self love here, and these pictures really show you the amazingness of what the balm did. The balm is literally all I ever used on it. I taped it up every morning and evening with a gauze and a good helping of the balm and it never scabbed, dried up or got infected! I was sold.

magic-manuka-balm-bee-sensualI’ve used it on pimples with great success and one of my friends loves using it as a deeply nourishing cleansing mask. It tastes amazing too (I know from making it), but I didn’t say that 😉 I also recently heard it did great things for someone’s eczema. So I’m looking forward to more stories!

Basically the balm is wonderful for pimples, scars, wounds, rashes, eczema, massage and pretty much anything else. If you would like to read more about our magic manuka honey collected by our bees from the many stands of native bush in the beautiful Far North, head over to our Ingredients page.

The Beginnings of a Natural Skincare Journey – Bee Sensual

So why Bee Sensual? I was asked the other day.

Hmmm. Great question. Where to start? I wondered. Do I go all the way back to my teenage years? Or later in the piece where meeting a beeman inspired me to combine my love of natural with the magic of bees and create a natural skincare product with the healing properties of honey? Or do I just go to the first time I got a concoction right and began creating names and logos? Hmmm…

Join me on the journey of natural skincare to find out why Bee Sensual began…

love-creature-millie-boontas

Everyone loves natural skincare that’s animal friendly 🙂

In order to answer the above question I need to give you a little background.

I was the product of two very nature loving, eco-passionate parents who liked to live in remote places in South Africa. At about 14 I started using my first body moisturiser. It was a well known South African brand that my mum used because it didn’t have petroleum in the ingredients list + the company was very strong about beauty without cruelty and increasing awareness around animal testing. Since I had been awakened to label interrogation, the only facial product I used throughout my teenage years was aloe gel.

Skip forward about 10 years to NZ, where once again I was on the hunt for a natural skincare solution. At uni, in Dunedin, us girls fell in love with a cocoa butter brand that smelt deliciously tropical and reminded us of days on the beach, however left a lot to be desired on the ingredients list. So, true to my nature, I kept the hunt alive and one day at a market stumbled across a hand made Body Butter. Not only did it smell delicious, but it was almost completely natural. I was hooked. For the next few years this was my go-to.

natural-skincare-cocoa-butter

Cocoa butter in its raw form.

Unfortunately (or fortunately), the creator took a full time job and I could no longer order my Body Butter from her via email. Well, I thought to myself, the ingredients list doesn’t look too complicated…. Being a bit of a DIYer I decided I was going to try and recreate something similar, but even better. My love for creating wonderful natural skincare was born. In the process I studied every ingredient and found a couple of more suitable replacements that had a good reputation, and I decided to use 100% pure essential oils for the scent.

This journey to create my own natural skincare concoction came with many failed attempts. How on earth do you get the water and oil phases to stay together? What do you do when they separate? Which essential oils are going to be best together? How much cocoa butter do I put in to make it a body butter rather than a lotion?

Even though it wasn’t that long ago, Google was nothing like it is today, or maybe I wasn’t as adept at using it as I am now.

There was a lot of trial and error and for a while I gave up. I used some ‘natural’ brand that didn’t overly inspire me, and stored my creations away for a rainy day.

In 2007 I met a beekeeper, who is now my fiancé, and we travelled and worked in Australia for three years. In 2008, whilst living in our van at a honey factory in Tasmania I was once again inspired to try my hand at making my own natural skincare, only this time using the amazing leatherwood honey and beeswax as part of my concoction. There were failures, but also a few more results that began looking a little more like success.

honey-factory-natural-skincare-nz

The amount of honey in this factory was overwhelming…in a delicious kind of way! Oh and the smells!

We’re getting closer…

Long story a little shorter, I kept playing. I built up a wonderful suitcase of all the different goodies used to create natural skincare. I did more research.

Bee Sensual’s silky smooth Body Butter 🙂

By the time we came back to NZ in 2011 to start our own beekeeping business, I knew that I wanted to start my own natural skincare brand as well. By the end of that year I had drawn a million logos on a million different pieces of paper and slowly slowly it all came together at the end of 2012. My very own natural skincare dream became a reality – Bee Sensual. The tagline: Simply Sensuous Skin – natural handmade skincare.

I am now even more passionate about interrogating labels. Even when you see ‘natural’ or ‘organic’ on the front – you can’t always believe what they tell you and it pays to know what to look for on the back of a label. I am also even more passionate about using only 100% pure essential oils to create beautiful scent combinations for my natural skincare products.

Bee Sensual is continually evolving, and even though this story illustrates why it started, it is now so much more…. Not only am I passionate about using only natural products on your precious skin, but I believe deeply in taking these moments to be mindful, get in touch with our senses, take a few moments of me-time and gift ourselves with a dose of self-love that we all deserve.

I want all women (and men) to realise that beauty is not skin deep. Beauty is so much more than that. If you can start to see your own beauty and give yourself the love that you deserve, you will glow with an inner beauty that no concoctions can ever create, only enhance!

Do I need a skincare routine?

Some of you reading this will have a skincare routine, some will love the idea of a skincare routine, but only sometimes stick to it, and some of you may not have any skincare routine at all. All or none of the above are perfectly fine.

Me, I’m an inbetweener of sorts. I have a skincare routine, but it’s a very flexible one. There are some things that I do everyday in routine fashion, but the products change (I will delve into that in a second).

I actually believe it’s a really good idea to mix it up. I think our skin loves change, and so if some nights you simply cleanse and then go to sleep with nothing else on your skin, that’s great. And if some days all you want is Gel Toner, yet on others you want Gel Toner and Day Cream…wonderful. Listen to what your skin wants, because like us it needs variation.

My skincare ‘routine’…

There will always be a few sprays of the Rose Mister somewhere during the day, because I’m in love with that amazing smell right now and it is SO hydrating!

rose-mister-skincare-routine

Morning:

Face – wash my face with cold water (even in winter) and pat dry with a towel. I also glance at myself in the mirror, say good morning and give myself a smile (even on those days where I don’t feel like it). Moisturise – now this could sometimes simply be a gentle application of Gel Toner and nothing else. Other days it might only be Rejuvenating Oil. When I’m feeling like using cream, in the summer I’ll use Day Cream and winter when my skin’s a little dryer, the Night Cream. It really all depends.

If you like layering I would advise Gel Toner followed by either Rejuvenating Oil or Day Cream.

Body – at the moment I’m loving massaging my upper legs and glute muscles (;)) with Body Oil and then treating the rest to some Body Butter.

Evening:

Face – I wash my face in the shower with my Cream Cleanser. When I get out I put on either Gel Toner or Rejuvenating Oil because I feel like my skin is quite moisturised after cleansing. On days where I’ve been outside a lot and I feel like an extra boost, I’ll put Night Cream on. Most nights I also use Eye Love around my eyes and lips.

If you like layering I would advise Eye Love and Gel Toner followed by either the Rejuvenating Oil or Night Cream.

Body – some evenings I’ll moisturise before bed and others I won’t. At the moment if I do, it’s to give myself a loving massage with the Body Oil – it’s my self-love ritual that I’m really enjoying right now.

At least once a week I like to do a facemask and body-scrub. So I’ll either create a chocolate or turmeric facemask or simply cover my face in pure honey and leave for about 10-15 minutes. I’m actually working on a gentle face scrub at the moment that I will be releasing soon.

body-coffee-scrub-diy

As for the body I have made a coffee body scrub (ground coffee, honey and almond oil), which I massage all over my arms, legs and body, and just love the tingling feeling that the scrub leaves and how delicious I smell afterwards.

I believe the most important ingredient to your skincare routine however, EVERY single DAY, is a dose of self-love. Love your skin as you’re cleansing or moisturising it.

Love your body – even if it’s only that one square centimetre that you can bring yourself to love on your arm, or your eyelashes, or the shape of your fingers.

Start small, keeping yourself open to the possibility of increasing the amount of self love over time.

You deserve it!
