5 miraculous macadamia oil skin benefits

Other than being totally delicious, did you know that macadamia nut oil offers a whole range of health benefits – and not just for your beautiful skin? Although we could go on and on about these, we are going to zero in on the miraculous macadamia oil skin benefits in today’s post.

Having the ability to be taken either orally or topically, this wonderful oil has a chemical profile very similar to the human sebum. With so many marvellous properties, we struggled to keep this list to 5 benefits. It’s really no wonder this amazing ingredient features in so many of the Bee Sensual range of skin products!

5 Miraculous Macadamia Oil Skin Benefits

  1. The perfect choice for mature or dry skin

Macadamia nut oil contains one of the highest sources of palmitoleic fatty acids, an acid that exists naturally in our skin, but depletes as we age. Topping up our stores via skin treatment helps to lubricate and waterproof the skin, just like sebum.

  2. Heals your wounds

Did we mention how amazing palmitoleic acid is? Just incase you aren’t convinced, the omega 7 in this incredible fatty acid also aids in healing wounds, scratches and burns. The anti-inflammatory properties can also help reduce eczema or other skin irritations.

  3. Balances oily skin

Yes, you read correctly! Oil – at least the miraculous macadamia variety – contains linoleic acid which balances sebum production in oily skin and creates a natural protective barrier.

  4. Treats itchiness and redness

The phytosterols in macadamia nut oil are calming and healing and help restore the skin’s barrier function.

  5. Slight natural sunscreen

Containing a natural SPF of between 6-8, the powerful plant compound known as cinnamic acid which is contained in macadamia nut oil offers natural sun protection properties.

There is so much more we could say about this amazing stuff! If you’d like to read more about macadamia oil skin benefits, a great chemical profile for Macadamia Nut Oil can found here. But for now, we prefer to let the macadamia do the talking…

You can find this incredible oil in the following Bee Sensual products:

Magic Manuka Balm

The story behind our Magic Manuka Balm

Exciting news here at Bee Sensual. We have a new and amazing product – Magic Manuka Balm!

How it came to be?

The owner of Kauri Cliffs wanted to meet with me last year to develop a range of manuka products for their spa. He had used manuka honey with great success on a wound on his leg and is now a firm believer in it’s amazing properties.

I played around with ratios of honey to my organic balm and eventually settled on the perfect blend – 15% 10+ manuka honey with organic beeswax, organic almond oil and vitamin e oil.

He loved it and when I trialled it on myself it left my skin feeling AMAZINGLY soft and hydrated. I fell in love. Since it has such a high manuka content I decided it must be good for all sorts of things and I set to work testing my theory. Not long thereafter I fell off my bicycle and grazed my elbow well and truly on rough tar (long and not so lady-like story) – great testing opportunity!

I know, elbows aren’t that sexy, but hey we’re all about self love here, and these pictures really show you the amazingness of what the balm did. The balm is literally all I ever used on it. I taped it up every morning and evening with a gauze and a good helping of the balm and it never scabbed, dried up or got infected! I was sold.

magic-manuka-balm-bee-sensualI’ve used it on pimples with great success and one of my friends loves using it as a deeply nourishing cleansing mask. It tastes amazing too (I know from making it), but I didn’t say that 😉 I also recently heard it did great things for someone’s eczema. So I’m looking forward to more stories!

Basically the balm is wonderful for pimples, scars, wounds, rashes, eczema, massage and pretty much anything else. If you would like to read more about our magic manuka honey collected by our bees from the many stands of native bush in the beautiful Far North, head over to our Ingredients page.

The Beginnings of a Natural Skincare Journey – Bee Sensual

So why Bee Sensual? I was asked the other day.

Hmmm. Great question. Where to start? I wondered. Do I go all the way back to my teenage years? Or later in the piece where meeting a beeman inspired me to combine my love of natural with the magic of bees and create a natural skincare product with the healing properties of honey? Or do I just go to the first time I got a concoction right and began creating names and logos? Hmmm…

Join me on the journey of natural skincare to find out why Bee Sensual began…

Everyone loves natural skincare that’s animal friendly 🙂

In order to answer the above question I need to give you a little background.

I was the product of two very nature loving, eco-passionate parents who liked to live in remote places in South Africa. At about 14 I started using my first body moisturiser. It was a well known South African brand that my mum used because it didn’t have petroleum in the ingredients list + the company was very strong about beauty without cruelty and increasing awareness around animal testing. Since I had been awakened to label interrogation, the only facial product I used throughout my teenage years was aloe gel.

Skip forward about 10 years to NZ, where once again I was on the hunt for a natural skincare solution. At uni, in Dunedin, us girls fell in love with a cocoa butter brand that smelt deliciously tropical and reminded us of days on the beach, however left a lot to be desired on the ingredients list. So, true to my nature, I kept the hunt alive and one day at a market stumbled across a hand made Body Butter. Not only did it smell delicious, but it was almost completely natural. I was hooked. For the next few years this was my go-to.

Cocoa butter in its raw form.

Unfortunately (or fortunately), the creator took a full time job and I could no longer order my Body Butter from her via email. Well, I thought to myself, the ingredients list doesn’t look too complicated…. Being a bit of a DIYer I decided I was going to try and recreate something similar, but even better. My love for creating wonderful natural skincare was born. In the process I studied every ingredient and found a couple of more suitable replacements that had a good reputation, and I decided to use 100% pure essential oils for the scent.

This journey to create my own natural skincare concoction came with many failed attempts. How on earth do you get the water and oil phases to stay together? What do you do when they separate? Which essential oils are going to be best together? How much cocoa butter do I put in to make it a body butter rather than a lotion?

Even though it wasn’t that long ago, Google was nothing like it is today, or maybe I wasn’t as adept at using it as I am now.

There was a lot of trial and error and for a while I gave up. I used some ‘natural’ brand that didn’t overly inspire me, and stored my creations away for a rainy day.

In 2007 I met a beekeeper, who is now my fiancé, and we travelled and worked in Australia for three years. In 2008, whilst living in our van at a honey factory in Tasmania I was once again inspired to try my hand at making my own natural skincare, only this time using the amazing leatherwood honey and beeswax as part of my concoction. There were failures, but also a few more results that began looking a little more like success.

The amount of honey in this factory was overwhelming…in a delicious kind of way! Oh and the smells!

We’re getting closer…

Long story a little shorter, I kept playing. I built up a wonderful suitcase of all the different goodies used to create natural skincare. I did more research.

Bee Sensual’s silky smooth Body Butter 🙂

By the time we came back to NZ in 2011 to start our own beekeeping business, I knew that I wanted to start my own natural skincare brand as well. By the end of that year I had drawn a million logos on a million different pieces of paper and slowly slowly it all came together at the end of 2012. My very own natural skincare dream became a reality – Bee Sensual. The tagline: Simply Sensuous Skin – natural handmade skincare.

I am now even more passionate about interrogating labels. Even when you see ‘natural’ or ‘organic’ on the front – you can’t always believe what they tell you and it pays to know what to look for on the back of a label. I am also even more passionate about using only 100% pure essential oils to create beautiful scent combinations for my natural skincare products.

Bee Sensual is continually evolving, and even though this story illustrates why it started, it is now so much more…. Not only am I passionate about using only natural products on your precious skin, but I believe deeply in taking these moments to be mindful, get in touch with our senses, take a few moments of me-time and gift ourselves with a dose of self-love that we all deserve.

I want all women (and men) to realise that beauty is not skin deep. Beauty is so much more than that. If you can start to see your own beauty and give yourself the love that you deserve, you will glow with an inner beauty that no concoctions can ever create, only enhance!

How Bee Sensual has evolved…

We cannot separate our personal journey from our business, and recently I’ve been reflecting on how my dream for Bee Sensual, due to my own personal journey, has evolved and blossomed since it was shared with the world at the end of 2012.

Bee Sensual grew out of a dream for natural skin care, using no nasties and the wonderful healing products of bees; ‘sensual’ for the self connection opportunity it would create. Then I began exploring the word ‘sensual’ more and how it’s tied in with ‘mindfulness’, and how necessary it is to simply live in this one moment as often as we can. And I saw Bee Sensual products as a way to remind us to become mindful in that moment we gently apply them…taking in the smells and textures and sensation on the skin.

And from that came the most important development of all…gentle self-love.

Realising how much I’ve berated myself in my life and beaten myself up, in younger years seeking perfection and a body that only airbrushed models have, I knew it was vital to change this.

There is a saying:

You cannot truly take care of that which you do not love.

So, if I look at my skin and feel frustrated and disappointed by the wrinkles around my eyes, or I curse the scars from the teenage days of picking pimples, or I want to hide away the too many freckles or mingled discolouration, am I really loving myself? Am I treating myself the way I would a friend?

The answer is a big NO!

So how can I expect to truly take care of myself? How can I expect my body, which is only doing its best (always) with what it’s presented with, to feel energetic, vibrant and healthy? We need to send our bodies love. Let me say that again…it is essential that we send our bodies and ourselves love. By creating stress in our systems around what we see in the mirror, or how we should be acting, we only further deplete our energy and resilience. We’ve got to love what we see first and the rest will flow. We can’t wait for the day we find a magical miracle cream that takes away wrinkles, or an injection that paralyses our skin into non-expression. This may bring a few moments of happiness, but then we will simply find the next thing to hate or berate.

We need to love. Simple. Yet not so simple at all! Self-love seems to be one of those really tricky, confusing concepts that gets thrown at us at some point in our lives. How do I do that? you may ask. Well, I definitely don’t have all the answers, but I know that through necessity, practice, constant reminders and perseverance, I love myself a lot more than I did when Bee Sensual first began.

One of my dreams now is that, through our beautiful Bee Sensual products made with love, those using them will find moments to be still and present and send their precious self some much needed love. Remember this…even if it’s only twice a day when you moisturise, that’s all it takes…it is the simple act of planting the self-love seed that, over time and with regular nourishment, will grow into a beautiful self-love plant that blossoms in ways that you never thought possible!

Do I need a skincare routine?

Some of you reading this will have a skincare routine, some will love the idea of a skincare routine, but only sometimes stick to it, and some of you may not have any skincare routine at all. All or none of the above are perfectly fine.

Me, I’m an inbetweener of sorts. I have a skincare routine, but it’s a very flexible one. There are some things that I do everyday in routine fashion, but the products change (I will delve into that in a second).

I actually believe it’s a really good idea to mix it up. I think our skin loves change, and so if some nights you simply cleanse and then go to sleep with nothing else on your skin, that’s great. And if some days all you want is Gel Toner, yet on others you want Gel Toner and Day Cream…wonderful. Listen to what your skin wants, because like us it needs variation.

My skincare ‘routine’…

There will always be a few sprays of the Rose Mister somewhere during the day, because I’m in love with that amazing smell right now and it is SO hydrating!

Face – wash my face with cold water (even in winter) and pat dry with a towel. I also glance at myself in the mirror, say good morning and give myself a smile (even on those days where I don’t feel like it). Moisturise – now this could sometimes simply be a gentle application of Gel Toner and nothing else. Other days it might only be Rejuvenating Oil. When I’m feeling like using cream, in the summer I’ll use Day Cream and winter when my skin’s a little dryer, the Night Cream. It really all depends.

If you like layering I would advise Gel Toner followed by either Rejuvenating Oil or Day Cream.

Body – at the moment I’m loving massaging my upper legs and glute muscles (;)) with Body Oil and then treating the rest to some Body Butter.

Face – I wash my face in the shower with my Cream Cleanser. When I get out I put on either Gel Toner or Rejuvenating Oil because I feel like my skin is quite moisturised after cleansing. On days where I’ve been outside a lot and I feel like an extra boost, I’ll put Night Cream on. Most nights I also use Eye Love around my eyes and lips.

If you like layering I would advise Eye Love and Gel Toner followed by either the Rejuvenating Oil or Night Cream.

Body – some evenings I’ll moisturise before bed and others I won’t. At the moment if I do, it’s to give myself a loving massage with the Body Oil – it’s my self-love ritual that I’m really enjoying right now.

At least once a week I like to do a facemask and body-scrub. So I’ll either create a chocolate or turmeric facemask or simply cover my face in pure honey and leave for about 10-15 minutes. I’m actually working on a gentle face scrub at the moment that I will be releasing soon.

As for the body I have made a coffee body scrub (ground coffee, honey and almond oil), which I massage all over my arms, legs and body, and just love the tingling feeling that the scrub leaves and how delicious I smell afterwards.

I believe the most important ingredient to your skincare routine however, EVERY single DAY, is a dose of self-love. Love your skin as you’re cleansing or moisturising it.

Love your body – even if it’s only that one square centimetre that you can bring yourself to love on your arm, or your eyelashes, or the shape of your fingers.

Start small, keeping yourself open to the possibility of increasing the amount of self love over time.

You deserve it!

Winter skin care…are you listening to what your skin wants?

Winter. It’s in full swing up here in the Far North of NZ (quite mild so far). With it comes the cold, the rain and sometimes the dry cold. I don’t know about you, but when that dry cold hits, the skin on my body wants to drink up my Body Butter, my hands get drier than normal and my face only wants Night Cream and lots of Gel Toner (day and night). When it comes to winter skin care, listen to what your skin’s wanting, and adjust accordingly.

There are some tips that may be useful for most of us when it comes to winter skin care:

  • Using a gentle, creamy cleanser that nourishes instead of strips your skin.
  • A little extra hand love in the form of Hand Cream.
  • Lips often get quite dry when it’s cold, so the odd application of an all-natural, protecting Lip Balm can work wonders.
  • A simple and easy face mask that not only gently removes dead skin cells, but is deeply moisturising and healing – honey (ideally manuka, but any honey is great).

Winter isn’t only cold, rain and dry cold, however. It’s also time for cosiness, fires (if you have one), cuddling under woolly blankets, reading in your pyjamas, nourishing soups, root vegetables done a million ways and permission for a little more time…self time. I find that with the sun setting so early I seek out a little more time for things that are just for me…reading, pulling out the pencils and being creative, or listening to inspirational talks while I explore my sewing box. When I do things just for me, I feel like I’m allowing a bit more self-love to flow, which I’m working on getting better at.

I never used to like winters, but recently I’ve come to embrace them in a way I always have the other seasons. Maybe it’s something to do with the bees, and being beekeepers? I adore summer and the sun and more time outdoors in nature, but in winter there’s a certain quiet and calm because the bees pretty much go into ‘hibernation’…they don’t need as much attention, and so everything at Bee Sensual slows down a little, even time…

I also cherish those clear sunny winter days, there is something truly magical about them for me!

What are your winter skin care tips and how do you give yourself a little extra ‘me-time’?

Pleasure In This Moment…

pleasure-autumn-leaves-mindfulnessBreathing in I calm body and mind, breathing out I smile. Dwelling in the present moment I know this is the only moment.

– Thich Nhat Hanh

Do you get pleasure out of your daily skin care routine?

Do your many daily routines bring you pleasure?

Pleasure…that sensual feeling of being right there in that moment, enjoying, feeling, with every sinew and cell of your body, luxuriating in it, and bubbles of gratitude fizzing up through your insides. That to me is pleasure, savouring this moment that we have right now.

I walk outside and the sunbeams fall on my face. The wind tousles my salty hair and I hear that piercing sound of the cicadas. Immediately I am right here in the moment. Right here with my feet on the grass, savouring. Every sense is awake and I feel that gratitude fizzing…for experiencing this moment, for having all my senses to be able to luxuriate in all that the world is offering me right this second. I breathe in deeply and as I breathe out I smile. Hello pleasure, I am here with you, hearing you, enjoying you, taking note of you, thank you! Thank you!

It might be that first cup of coffee for some that brings pleasure in the moment...what is it for you?

It might be that first cup of coffee for some that brings pleasure in the moment…what is it for you?

Maybe for you it’s that morning coffee you dream of as you roll out of bed. First that smell hits your nostrils and a slight smile plays at the corner of your lips. Next you hold the cup in both hands and the warmth drifts into your skin. Your shoulders drop and your breathing slows ever so slightly. You’re letting go of some of that morning madness. You take a slow tentative sip and that hot liquid swirls around your mouth and disappears down your throat. You’re in these moments, savouring, enjoying them, letting them play with your senses and feeling this dose of pleasure dissolve the tension in your body.

Finding pleasure in skincare

As I have written before, Bee Sensual, as well as being natural skin care inspired by our bees and their delicious honey, is also about sensuality and mindfulness. Over the years I have worked on changing my attitude to my body and the way I speak with it. I try to be more conscious of the relationship I have with her, and of making it a special one. My skincare rituals are all a part of this shift. I wake up in the morning and wander over to the basin, splash my face a few times with cold water and then pat it dry. On the days when I’m open to the sensual pleasures around me I delight in the sharp contrast of cold on my warm sleepy face. As I pat it dry I look at myself in the mirror and think ‘you and me, we’re going to tackle this day head on, with joy and enthusiasm.’

Depending on what I’m up to for the day I take the Gel Toner and pump a little into the palm of my hand. I love the hint of geranium, and it’s often enough to stop me and remind me to quit thinking about what I didn’t do yesterday and what I should be doing this morning. So busy racing ahead and forgetting this moment. I gently massage it all over my face taking pleasure in the texture and the dewy feeling it leaves on my skin. If I start to look critically at the smile lines hinting at the corners of my eyes, I pull myself up. I remind myself that my face and I, we’ve done some things and we’ve seen some places, and don’t you bet we’ve had some bloody great laughs. So, if I have a few lines around my eyes it means a life of much laughter. What a gift.

Slowing down

Basically I believe that pleasure is all around us all the time, waiting for us to slow down and notice it. It begs us, it plays with us, calling from

The heavenly scent from an unfurling rose = pleasure in that moment.

The heavenly scent from an unfurling rose = pleasure in that moment 🙂

the tops of a fence post in the form of a flitting fantail, gently reminding us as a rose unfurling, releasing its heavenly aromas into the air. Or quietly teasing, as the wind tickling our face with our hair. When I say slow down, I don’t mean quit your day job and go and live in the bush. I simply mean slow the pace of your mind and open up a little to the pleasure waiting for us in every moment.

Try it next time you’re moisturising your body. Make that one minute your sacred time of flinging the windows wide open for pleasure to fly in. Let her sit softly in your hands as you feel the strength and great support that your legs give you each day. Feel your skin softening from the moisturiser. Your muscles gaining a little extra oomph from your gentle reassuring touch. We’re a team after all, us and our bodies! Give yourself a big, loving smile for the day in that mirror 🙂

What is bringing you pleasure in the moment?

DIY Chocolate Face Mask – 100% edible!

organic yogurt, raw honey, manuka

3 ingredients from your kitchen: cocoa powder, raw honey and yoghurt

A DIY chocolate Face Mask to try at home 🙂

For an exfoliating, regenerating and delicious chocolaty treat for your skin, all you need is equal amounts of 3 common ingredients from your kitchen:

  • a cup/container of your choice
  • 1 tsp cocoa powder (I use Trade Aid’s Fair Trade organic) – high in antioxidants and wonderful for skin renewal
  • 1 tsp raw honey (I use our own manuka of course) – exfoliating, hydrating, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and regenerating
  • 1 tsp yoghurt (one of my favs is this BioFarm organic – plain) – not only rich in nutrients (such as zinc, calcium and b vitamins), but also high in lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid amazing for exfoliating and making your skin feel soft and refreshed

You can of course make larger quantities and store it in the fridge for a few days. Mine doesn’t ever make it to storage because it’s too delicious as an afternoon (or morning snack)!

DIY chocolate face mask

Organic cocoa powder, raw honey, organic yoghurt = delicious chocolate face mask (100% edible)

Mix together and then gently apply to your face – a lovely soft make-up brush would be ideal here. In circular motions I then lightly massage the chocolaty goodness into my skin to make sure that it deals to old skin cells and cleans out my pores. After about 10-15 minutes when it gets tacky to touch I rinse my face with warm water and then lovingly apply Rejuvenating Oil. My skin feels so soft and nourished afterwards!

I’m quite glad my tongue is not too long, because although so tasty it would be pretty gross to lick it all off after exfoliating 😉

DIY cocoa face mask

It’s so quick and easy – please give it a go and tell me how you find it. Remember as always to be kind to your beautiful face, thank it for everything and smile 🙂

Also, please let me know: what’s the yummiest face mask you’ve ever made?

Sensual – sen•su•al

sen·su·al (sɛnsjʊəl) – relating to or affecting any of the senses

Right, I figure January 2015 is as good a time as any to start my first blog! So sensual it is 🙂 I have spent the week creating goals, brainstorming, putting lots of coloured pens to paper and I feel ready for this year ahead.

I’ve decided to start with our name, Bee Sensual. Of course it’s clear where Bee came from: the hard-working girls in our hives who are so busy 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, collecting exquisite honey, kindly sharing it with us to eat by the spoonfuls and put in our skincare. Sensual on the other hand is one of those almost risqué words! It’s so often associated with sexuality, evoking erotic indulgence. Yet in its true form it simply means relating to the senses. I see it as an awareness of the sights, tastes, smells, sounds and physical sensations around us. This to me equals mindfulness…being fully present in that moment in our life.

This is what attracted me to the name, Bee Sensual: to be mindful and present in as many moments as you can. So often, as we’re rushing in the morning (and all day really), we splash our face with water, roughly dry it and then grab the closest moisturiser container, scoop some onto our fingers and hurriedly rub it into our face. We’re thinking about everything we need to do. What hasn’t been done. What we’ll cook for dinner tonight. As we glance in the mirror to make sure there are no white streaks left we mentally comment on the dark rings under our eyes or a wrinkle we hadn’t noticed before. We berate ourselves for not looking ‘good’ enough.

Bee-ing Sensual

Day Cream, orange blossom and rose geranium

A dream

My dream is for our Bee Sensual products to be a daily reminder to you to stop for a moment, slow down and take it all in:

  • let it start as your eyes find the container you’re looking for
  • take in the texture of the frosted glass as you hold the jar in your hand to scoop out some Day Cream
  • become aware of the scents that reach your nose, the subtle citrus with rose geranium undertones
  • look yourself in the eye in the mirror and find at least one part of your beautiful face to rejoice in
  • in that moment give thanks for what you see
  • breathe and smile

If Bee Sensual can increase your mindfulness (and self-appreciation) by even one minute a day, that will make my heart very happy 🙂
